STATE OF EMERGENCY

July 1 — November 1, 2021
Triumph Gallery
The pandemic of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) officially arrived in Russia at the very beginning of March 2020.
The pandemic of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) officially arrived in Russia at the very beginning of March 2020. More than a year has passed since the registration of the first infected person — during this time, the world, and with it Russia, seem to have changed forever — the virus divided the history of our time into conditional "before" and "after". Talk of a "return" to a normal and habitual way of life has been forgotten — we are now increasingly talking about a relatively "new" social order, which, without being fully established, has already influenced the foreign policy of states, led to the transformation of social institutions and turned our moral ideas about cleanliness, our own body and established new rules of interaction. with each other.

The exhibition "State of Emergency" at the Tambov Regional Art Gallery is dedicated to the manifestations of the new "normality" that is emerging before our eyes, the third in a series that the Moscow Triumph Gallery, together with its partners, organizes at various venues. The exhibition "State of Emergency" was opened in July 2020 at the Triumph Gallery and was Russia’s first attempt at artistic and research understanding of the pandemic phenomenon and its consequences through the works of contemporary Russian artists created during the period of isolation or reinterpreted in its context. A special feature of the series is the speed of reaction to the events taking place. The exhibition at the Triumph Gallery presented several thematic areas at once. She researched the impact of the state of emergency on all areas of human life.

On the one hand, the events have affected our behavior, social norms, and the organization of urban space. On the other hand, there were changes in our personal sense of space and time, and we were all immersed in exploring our own psychoemotional states. The exhibition at the Triumph Gallery was followed by an exhibition at the Museum of Moscow called the Museum of Self-Isolation. This time, along with the artwork, documents, artifacts and stories from residents of Moscow were presented. The "Museum of Self-isolation" focused on the experience of voluntary and forced placement of urban residents in conditions of self-isolation.

The exhibition at the Tambov Regional Art Gallery is a new version of the "State of Emergency", which, on the one hand, combines works from two previous projects, and on the other hand, marks a new focus — the spatial dimension of the pandemic. At the same time, space refers not only to the city or the information environment, but also to the space of imagination available to each of us as a tool for critical analysis of the routine state of emergency. The artwork presented — some literally, and some indirectly through metaphors and symbols — focuses on the changes in these spaces and the stresses that have arisen as a result of the constraints caused by the pandemic.
