The Magic Mountain

Alexey Medvedev and Oleg Medvedev (MO+MA)
November 22 — December 15, 2024
Gallery "Triumph"
The exhibition creates a hermetic space where the processes of transformation in contemporary culture are presented metaphorically.
Triumph Gallery presents an exhibition by Kaliningrad-based artists MO+MA — Alexey Medvedev and Oleg Medvedev — titled "The Magic Mountain." The artists explore the influence of technology on human self-perception and the sense of reality.

The exhibition forms a hermetic space where the processes of transformation in contemporary culture are presented metaphorically. The title "The Magic Mountain" refers to the novel The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, whose plot unfolds in a tuberculosis sanatorium high in the Alps, where the characters are united by a liminal state between the real and the illusory.

The artists project this duality onto contemporary processes of integration between the digital and the physical. In the Medvedevs' video installations, the digital environment appears as a kind of purgatory where abstract objects exist in constant symbiosis. On the one hand, it is a space where meanings undergo deconstruction; on the other, it becomes a field in which new thoughts, ideas, and beliefs begin to form, once again acquiring a physical visual form.

One of the key elements of the exhibition and the Medvedev brothers' artistic exploration is the chroma key screen. By its very purpose, it is created to be excluded: its presence in physical reality is sacrificed to digital reality, yet without such deconstruction, the chroma key loses its value. This element serves as the central metaphor of "The Magic Mountain," reflecting the idea of the human being as a carrier of cultural and ideological representation.
