Simultaneously and Nearby. Images of Conspiratorial Thinking

February 10 — March 12, 2023
Triumph Gallery
The project brings together works by artists who reflect on conspiracy thinking, systems of secret signs, and the aura that forms around them.
Triumph Gallery presents the group exhibition Simultaneously and Nearby. Images of Conspiratorial Thinking. The project brings together works by artists who reflect on conspiracy thinking, systems of secret signs, and the aura that forms around them.

The existence of conspiracy theories points to a loss of control and a growing sense of fear in the face of the inexplicable, as well as an attempt to justify or explain it. In contrast to the spread of a scientific worldview, people have increasingly turned to the creation of new myths. Whether absurd or grounded in reality, conspiracy theories occupy the "grey zones" of our understanding of the world, seeking to rationalize events, uncover signs, connections, patterns, and imagined causes. Technologies, including digital platforms, have become catalysts for the development of conspiratorial thinking.

One method for identifying conspiratorial thinking was proposed by an American prosecutor who independently investigated the assassination of John F. Kennedy. His theory is based on the search for various kinds of coincidences that help reveal connections in non-obvious situations occurring simultaneously and in close proximity. This illogical suspicion and a certain paranoia inherent in his approach demonstrate that conspiracy thinking can arise from virtually any context, and show how such a perspective can distort one’s perception of reality.

Conspiracy thinking does not follow a single canon, yet its body of theories is united by a shared methodology built on paradox. On the one hand, conspiracy theories rely on total skepticism; on the other, they lack skepticism toward themselves.
