Based on Real Events

July 7 — September 3, 2023
Triumph Gallery
The works presented in the exhibition engage with events of various kinds and scales—historical, cultural, sporting, criminal, and even culinary.
Triumph Gallery presents Based on Real Events, the largest exhibition of Russian video art in recent years, comparable in scale to a biennial. The project explores the relationship between video art and reality, as well as the artistic strategies used to engage with it.

The works on view address events of various kinds and scales—historical, cultural, sporting, criminal, and even culinary. Particular attention is given to mediated reality, which today shapes the public agenda and our perception of the world. The project focuses on contemporary forms of documentary storytelling that can dissect, mystify, falsify, or push reality to the point of absurdity.

The history of visual art has, in one way or another, always been connected to reality. Today, however, human existence unfolds within a constant diffusion of the material and the digital: together, they form a hybrid reality that equally shapes our lives. The very notion of reality has undergone a radical transformation, and its boundaries have significantly expanded.

The exhibition Based on Real Events. Selected Works of Russian Video Art will take place in the Grand Wine Storage of the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art. Conceived as a site-specific project, it engages with the space and constructs its own landscape. The architecture of the exhibition forms a labyrinth, becoming a metaphor for the relationship between contemporary individuals and reality. "Wandering in the dark, we can only guess the final destination of our route and what we might encounter along the way. The deliberately chosen format of the exhibition embodies its central question: what constitutes real events?" note the project’s curators.
