Chronicle of Blooming Events

November 24, 2023 — January 21, 2024
Triumph Gallery and the "Tikhaya" Studio
The exhibition title quotes a work by Siniy Karandash, an anonymous street artist who places concise and witty inscriptions in urban spaces.
Triumph Gallery and the "Tikhaya" Studio present the exhibition Chronicle of Blooming Events, which continues the System Assembly project. The exhibition brings together more than twenty artists from Nizhny Novgorod. Conceived as a guide-like project, Chronicle of Blooming Events reveals the diverse facets of the city’s artistic life.

The exhibition title quotes a work by Siniy Karandash, an anonymous street artist known for placing concise and witty inscriptions in urban spaces. The architectural palette of "radiant blue" echoes one of the colors used by the artist. Street art, which became a hallmark of Nizhny Novgorod in the 2010s, is represented through photographic documentation of new projects by leading figures of the local art scene, including Nikita N., the Bomse team, the "TOY" team, and a younger generation of artists—Lev Kays, Nikita Mera, Nikita Etogde, Vera Shirdina, and the Lovemarket team. The exhibition is further complemented by books, zines, and magazines published by its participants.

The studio practices of Nizhny Novgorod artists are represented through a wide range of themes, subjects, and media—from painting and graphics to contemporary sculpture, installations, photography, video, and performative practices.

Some of the works exist in direct connection with the urban context. Andrey Olenev incorporates authentic urban artifacts into his pieces, while Nikita N. references his own street projects. The painting of the Bomse team creates a vivid accent within the exhibition through its raw street aesthetic, while the installation by the "TOY" team invites viewers to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a flea market.
The theme of time runs as a unifying thread through the works of many artists. The young artist Dania Pirogov addresses questions of temporality in contemporary life—his graphic sheets resemble sketches from archaeological excavations, while his sculptures evoke objects discovered during them. Alexey Starkov and Lena Lisitsa explore the theme of collective memory through experiments with photography and printmaking. The artist Vatsa creates magical artifacts inspired by a children’s fairy tale. Nikita Pirumov, in his painting, seeks to convey a sense of ambiguity and the chaos of the present day.

A number of artists propose their own methodologies for constructing works of art. Ivan Belov presents formalist experiments with sculptural forms and materials, while Vladimir Chernyshev multiplies graphic "errors" and then attempts to correct them. Artem Filatov’s objects are dispersed throughout the gallery space, mimicking malfunctioning technical devices. The video by Yakov Khorev offers the artist’s own model of the "artist-viewer" relationship, inviting participation and exchange of experience.

The exhibition Chronicle of Blooming Events is conceived as a traveling project and will be shown throughout 2024 in Kazan, Perm, Yekaterinburg, and other cities. A catalogue is currently in preparation.

About the System Assembly Project
The System Assembly project focuses on artistic scenes in different cities across Russia. Through artists and communities, it explores the processes that shape local cultural environments.

Over the past ten years, Triumph Gallery has consistently collaborated with cultural institutions across Russia, presenting artists from various cities in its Moscow space. The gallery’s curators have taken part in residencies and have also organized exhibitions in Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Saint Petersburg, Samara, Yekaterinburg, Voronezh, Novosibirsk, and Tambov.

The exhibitions within the System Assembly project are the result of this long-term exchange, observation, and research. Following their premiere in Moscow, the exhibitions in the series will tour other cities, initiating a process of exchange and introducing audiences to artistic scenes across different regions of the country.

The first exhibition in the series, One-Way Street, dedicated to the artistic scene of Kazan, was held at Triumph Gallery in the summer of 2023.
