ONCE UPON A TIME: The Kingdom of the Russian fairy tale

December 20, 2024 — March 1, 2026
CSI Winery
A fairy tale constructs a unique vision of the world, and its complexity transforms it into a system of images and types.
A fairy tale constructs a unique vision of the world, and its complexity transforms it into a system of images and types. This system, as a sketch of the surrounding reality, reflects and shapes our perception. She becomes a model of interaction with the world around her: observing the actions of the characters and the consequences of their decisions, we encounter moral dilemmas and emotional stresses that later recur in life.

In this model, the impossible and the familiar come into contact, creating an "architecture of surprise" — a space where the encounter with the unexpected turns into a tool of self-discovery. Surprise is not accidental here: it structures thinking, allows you to evaluate your own actions and see the connections between inner experience and the outside world.

Over time, the tale has evolved from oral, collective storytelling to written and visual forms. It has evolved along with society, reflecting its ideological fractures and cultural transformations. Motives and characters changed, and the accents of the moral code shifted: if a folk tale affirmed the basic categories of good and evil, then a literary one opened up a space of reflection — reflections on freedom, justice, and individual choice.

The Soviet interpretation of the genre redistributed the accents, turning the fairy tale into an educational tool, a metaphor for collective achievement and the transformative power of labor. The exhibition "Once upon a Time: The Kingdom of the Russian Fairy Tale" traces the evolution of the genre — from oral folklore to literary tradition and further to the literary Soviet fairy tale, showing how historical and social conditions changed its structure, images and functions.

The exposition of the MTS Live exhibition project was located in the historical dungeons of the CSI Vinzavod — under the arches of a Large Wine Storage. The project presented folk and author’s Russian fairy tales in a new interpretation — the current genre of total installation, which combined the works of contemporary artists and iconic illustrators, large-scale installations, authentic objects from different eras, fragments of films, costumes and props, video games and much more.

The organizer of the project is MTS Live.
