Royal Amusement

January 1 — February 3, 2023
State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia (Moscow), Russian Railway Museum (Saint Petersburg), and Triumph Gallery
The exhibition explores the debates and vicissitudes, the anxieties and hopes that accompanied the construction of the first passenger railway in Russia.
The project Royal Amusement is dedicated to the 185th anniversary of Russia’s railways. The exhibition explores the debates and vicissitudes, as well as the anxieties and hopes that accompanied the construction of the first passenger railway in Russia.

An important part of the exhibition’s narrative focuses on the positions and viewpoints of statesmen of the first half of the 19th century. Visitors will learn why Russia, despite being a major world power, long hesitated or was unable to begin building railways—and how the final decision in favor of their construction was ultimately made.

An important part of the project is dedicated to the journeys of Nicholas I of Russia along the Tsarskoye Selo Railway. Initially regarded as a "royal amusement," it was through the firm will of the emperor that the first 26 kilometers of track laid the foundation for the railway network of modern Russia. The exhibition brings together archival documents, rare book editions, historical maps, paintings and engravings, costumes, and models of steam locomotives from museum collections, libraries, and state archives. The story of the creation of the country’s first passenger railway is further complemented by multimedia installations. The Royal Amusement project unites exhibitions of the same name at the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia (from November 3) and the Russian Railway Museum (from November 2).
