EVENT HORIZONS

Dasha Maltseva
September 4 — September 23, 2021
Triumph Gallery
Human figures are merged into a chaotic, amorphous, almost abstracted mass, representing their helplessness and vulnerability before the inevitable.
The new exhibition by Dasha Maltseva combines two series by the artist. The project Danse Macabre approaches the allegorical narrative which owes to the Middle Ages. Through ironic scenes where Death chaperons people of different social strata to their graves, the artists sought to convey the idea of life’s fragility and futility of earthly wealth. Through the narrative Dasha endeavors to  express acceptance of circumstances brought on by superior forces. The artist deliberately pays special attention to the character of Death, painting the figure and its clothing with fine, nuanced and layered detail. Human figures are merged into a chaotic, amorphous, almost abstracted mass, representing their helplessness and vulnerability before the inevitable.

The second and the main part of the exhibition is the series Event Horizons. Introduced by  American physicist Wolfgang Rindler, the term "event horizon" denotes a boundary beyond which events cannot be observed. The project by Dasha Maltseva is a reflection on  the plasticity, formality and aesthetic of the boundaries between events. Each of  the still lifes in  the series represents one of the senses and acts as a self-sufficient image of  the cosmos, where all objects come to form a  unique event horizon. Their fundamental composition features refer to Flemish still lifes and evoke the grand canvases by Frans Snyders. Incorporating the features of still life composition, she suggests a completely different reading.

Each of her canvases is  an  amalgamation of objects and feelings from the past and the future. Contemporary fashion, well organized and glossy, is seen next to amorphous and plastic carcasses of classical still life genre, and the beautiful flowers are obscured behind shiny perfume flasks. Dasha’s event horizon is a pattern that arranges all the included objects, which are allegories rather than depictions of concrete things. For the artist, her works are a means of exploring the world and finding answers to global questions.
