As in his earlier projects, Si Luo conveys ideas associated with existentialist thought. Under the pressure of the fear of inevitable death, the human figures in his paintings move submissively in a single predetermined direction or merge into an anonymous crowd. Yet, unlike his previous works, the pieces presented in this exhibition are infused with irony, cynicism, and humor. Humor becomes the only force capable of resisting a painful and terrifying reality. "One cannot help but ask: is there hope within this immense, overwhelming wave of horror and madness, ready to sweep away everything in its path? After all, the story of the Ark is ultimately a story of salvation," writes the exhibition’s curator Polina Mogilina.
Si Luo is a Russian-Chinese artist. In 1999, he moved from Hubei to Saint Petersburg, where he first graduated from the Ioganson Art School at the Repin Academy and later from the Painting Faculty of the Repin Academy of Arts.
