Triumph Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Sofia Akimova, The Last Gala. The new series of works is based on the idea of creating a portrait of contemporary society and exploring its role in the life of the individual. A society that can either accept someone into its ranks or, conversely, reject them is thereby placed in a position of privilege in relation to the individual.

For the subjects of her works, Sofia chooses scenes of celebrations, receptions, parties, balls, and other forms of entertainment from the life of high society. This seemingly endless festivity unfolds at the twilight of the human era: the air above the heads of unsuspecting ladies and gentlemen thickens, filled with a sense of тревога and an approaching catastrophe. According to the artist, the very concept of celebration and its inner meaning have changed over recent decades, gradually transforming into a platform for networking, self-presentation, and content creation.

Sofia Akimova — and, following her, the viewer — assumes the position of an observer. The characters in her works form a living, moving mass, deliberately depersonalized and stripped of individual characteristics. "This glittering, buzzing swarm moves chaotically within a closed system, obeying its internal logic, and when encountering the ‘other,' identifies them according to the principle of ‘one of us / outsider,' using a set of social markers," notes curator Polina Mogilina. Observing the gathering from the outside, the viewer may wish to become part of it. However, upon closer inspection, the desired celebration reveals itself to be like an elaborate yet ultimately synthetic film set, whose ending is already known.
