Les Fleurs du mal

Liza Glushkova
March 17 — April 23, 2023
Triumph Gallery
The artist deliberately strips flora of its usual appeal and allure, instead unsettlingly endowing floral forms with a sense of intelligence.
Triumph Gallery presents Les Fleurs du mal, the first solo exhibition by Liza Glushkova. The project is part of the Launchpad program supporting emerging artists.

In her works, Liza constructs fantastical worlds where flowers and plants appear strange—filled with a cold light, geometric, or, conversely, semi-abstract. The artist deliberately strips flora of its usual appeal and allure, instead unsettlingly endowing floral forms with a sense of intelligence. These become the "active agents—sometimes the main protagonists," simultaneously evoking anxiety and curiosity, admiration and repulsion.

Glushkova’s works are deliberately theatrical, resembling multilayered stage sets at the center of which unfolds a narrative without a fixed script. On the one hand, she seeks to evoke in the viewer a sense of observing what is happening; on the other, a feeling of artificiality and distortion. The space depicted by the artist exists according to its own laws, and the course of events cannot be predicted.

"I emphasize the variability of what is taking place, the ambiguity of things. I am interested in how people perceive their surroundings and how they adapt. I wonder whether the world changes depending on the gaze of the one who looks at it," the artist explains.
