"I go back in my mind to the things that amazed me or arrested my attention <…> Sometimes, it would be a beautiful shadow, an unusual combination of colours, or shapes… Anything that can be found in the urban environment. So you think: yes, this was a curious moment, this needs to be committed to drawing," explains the artist.

The artworks represent topoi and architectural details, the geography depicted in the watercolours spans dozens of cities from New York to Vladivostok. A special place in Kuznetsov’s art is given to his home city of Moscow.

When faced with a blank sheet, Sergey Kuznetsov infuses the urban imagery with feelings, emotions, and memories from certain cityscapes and their constituent parts. This includes buildings in historic city centres, residential housing, cafés, churches and mosques, train stations, skyscrapers, office buildings and industrial landscapes. The result is a completely new, often personal perspective on familiar or mundane objects.

His artistic approach, expertise and many years of experience in building design and construction as well as public governance experience make Sergey Kuznetsov’s outlook quite unique and rich in style and the way he captures urban images. On the one hand, there is precision in the detailed brushwork, on the other, there is ample potential for interpretation, emotion, and anticipation in the exhibits.

Watercolours by Sergey Kuznetsov tap several domains that are important for the European culture: the city as the concentration of different people and concentration of production, the practice of flâneuring, the ideas of space and the dynamism of experience in this space.
