THE GARDEN OF ACCELERATING SONORS: SOUND ARCHITECTURE

Sergey Filatov
November 13, 2020 — February 14, 2021
Novosibirsk State Art Museum and Gallery "Triumph" (Moscow)
Sergey Filatov is an artist who addresses not only the visual, but also the sound space in his work, the author and developer of musical instruments and sound sculptures.
Sergey Filatov is an artist who addresses not only the visual, but also the sound space in his work, the author and developer of musical instruments and sound sculptures. The Novosibirsk State Art Museum and the Triumph Gallery (Moscow) are presenting the artist’s personal exhibition project "The Garden of Accelerating Sonora: Sound Architecture" in Novosibirsk. The exhibition opens up to the viewer and listener the field of artistic research of sound, presented generically or in the form of an ensemble.

Sergey Filatov creates works that balance sensuality and technological strategies, materiality and immaterial vibrations, mathematical precision and artificiality. The artist is interested in paradoxical interactions that reveal the acoustic properties of materials — metals, glass, polymers. In the course of further research, he discovers the principles of sound production, which reveal a new potential of objects and substances.

A key factor for understanding Sergey Filatov’s sound research is receptive aesthetics — attention not only to the design and sound of the works, but also to the ways they are perceived by the listener and the viewer. All works of sound art contain a wide range of interpretations that depend on the interaction of sound works with the environment — the location of objects in space and the movement of the viewer.

Thus, the central work of the exhibition, the installation "Garden of Accelerating Sonoras", is a soundscape that is generated in real time due to the resonances of steel sheets. And the chains of bubbles in the reservoirs of the sculpture "Updraft" create sound textures as a result of the interaction of the two elements.: The pitch of the sound depends on the water level and air velocity.

Movable microphones occasionally appear above the sources, recording and outputting delicate sounds into a vast space. The Parallel Touch sound installation is a kind of crystal metronome. Dispassionately and non-stop, like drops of water, he counts down periods and trajectories, reflecting moments of natural unevenness in his rhythm.

In addition, the exhibition "The Garden of accelerating Sonora: sound architecture" will include graphic works from the series "in search of a floating point" and a series of paintings "Horizon of Eternity". Their plastic solutions correlate with the harmonies and rhythms of Sergei Filatov’s sound works and demonstrate the unity of the artist’s creative method.
