Mederic Toure
June 29 — August 11, 2024
Gallery "Triumph"
The main themes of his work are the analysis of cultures across the African continent, the integration of their traditional elements with contemporary artistic practices, and the influence of the viewer’s background on the perception of art and artifacts from African countries.
Triumph Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Mederic Toure, Unveiled Visions. At the core of Toure’s artistic practice lies a synthesis of contemporary art and the traditional cultures of African peoples. In Toure’s work, seemingly paradoxical oppositions are easily brought together: the sacred and the profane, the extraordinary and the everyday, the cultural and the natural, and ultimately the rational and the mystical. Painting itself has become for him a daily, carefully calibrated ritual. This is reflected in the performative nature of his process, which involves a specific structure of interaction with the canvas, as well as in the volume of works produced each year. Toure places great importance on intuitive artistic exploration and emotional experience, aligned with the moment and his inner state, while at the same time maintaining a строго defined order in the working process. Thus, the creation of each work follows a particular scenario, rhythm, and internal condition.

The exhibition features paintings and graphic works dedicated to artistically reinterpreted images of totems and masks of mythological figures. They are surrounded by various symbols, and their forms appear distorted, composed of multiple overlapping elements. The exhibition space also includes wooden and metal sculptures created using the artist’s own technique. These "totemic" works are rich in symbolism, reflecting the continuity of his practice in relation to his native culture. His characters are constructed like collages — from diverse materials, metaphors, signs, and symbols. They unite multiple realms of reality: the physical and the otherworldly, the supernatural, the man-made, and the natural. These totemic figures may appear both unsettling and captivating. "This is my way of representing people as I see them: angry, happy, selfish, full of kindness, sometimes mischievous, and so on," the artist notes. The viewer’s task is to accept these characters and engage in the process of interpreting symbols, references, and emotional immersion.
