The Veil of Words

Anka Akhalay
October 2 — November 4, 2024
Moscow Museum of Modern Art and Triumph Gallery
A distinctive feature of the artist’s painterly method is the inclusion of textual fragments within abstract compositions, with quotations from Magnetic Fields serving this role in the new series of works.
Moscow Museum of Modern Art and Triumph Gallery, within the framework of the joint program "Young Lions," present an exhibition by Anka Akhalay titled "The Veil of Words." The new series of works is based on the poem Les Champs Magnétiques by André Breton and Philippe Soupault, founders of French Surrealism. Published in 1919 in the journal Littérature, it became the first work written using automatic writing—one of the fundamental creative methods of the Surrealists. The aim of automatic writing is to silence the voice of reason and write under the диктовку of the unconscious, without allowing rational judgment to intervene.

Using this method in her artistic practice, Anka Akhalay visualizes spontaneous images, emotional states, and feelings through abstract forms. She deliberately removes fixed semantic meaning from her compositions, leaving the viewer with an open field for constructing personal interpretations. Thus, the viewer’s interaction with the works is built on the possibility of forming individualized connections between the artwork and emotional response.

The exhibition includes 15 paintings executed in oil on canvas. Working primarily within abstraction, the artist favors soft, translucent color fields that create a distinctive luminous and airy atmosphere, as well as amorphous, intricate lines that cut across or swirl through the compositional space. A defining feature of her painterly method is the incorporation of textual fragments into abstract compositions—in this new series, these take the form of quotations from Les Champs Magnétiques.

As part of "The Veil of Words," the jewelry brand Alina Issa collaborated with Anka Akhalay to create a special collection presented within the exhibition. Inspired by the graceful yet unruly lines in Akhalay’s paintings, the designer and the artist developed the Moi jewelry collection, revealing the power of inner transformation in every woman.
