Udmurtia. Research

September 24 — October 21, 2013
Gallery "Triumph"
Visual anthropology is a field of science that has long established itself as a full-fledged scientific research method. Many modern artists throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries often turned to the methodology of visual anthropology in their works for artistic representation and conceptual understanding of the peculiarities of human behavior in various socio-cultural landscapes.
One of the pioneers of the introduction of visual anthropology into modern Russian art was Vladimir Kupriyanov, a Russian artist and photographer. For 5 years, Vladimir Kupriyanov and students of the Rodchenko School of Photography and Multimedia have been making expeditions to various regions of Russia to study the peculiarities of human habitation and the adaptation of traditional customs of peoples in a modern context with the help of modern mediums. The results of the expeditions have always been decorated in the form of exhibitions in local museums, published in the form of almanacs and catalogs, and have also been repeatedly exhibited in Moscow museums and exhibition halls.

Udmurtia is one of the most interesting and poorly studied regions of Russia. This is a region where pagan rituals are still very strong, along with Orthodoxy, as well as the influence of neighboring Muslim regions is great. Udmurtia has the highest suicide rate, but at the same time there is a high creative activity of young people, a strong national identity, but at the same time there is a rather noticeable mixing of the Udmurt people with neighboring ones.

The exhibition reflects the study of traditional Udmurt culture, modern regional issues and everyday life through modern media — photo and video materials. The exhibition is planned to include items from the museum’s collection. This mix of traditional objects of Udmurt folk art and works by modern young Russian artists will allow us to fully reflect the way of life and culture of the Udmurt people and emphasize the connection between generations.
